Ronaldo took the plunge into Lapland’s icy waters — and discovered the magic of Finnish sauna traditions
Cristiano Ronaldo’s Christmas trip to Finnish Lapland wasn’t just about snowy landscapes and Northern Lights. The football legend also immersed himself (literally) in one of the country’s most iconic winter traditions.
During his holiday escape, Ronaldo and his family visited Immelkartano Sauna World, a lakeside retreat nestled by Lake Immeljärvi at the foot of Kätkätunturi in Kittilä. Known for offering both traditional and modern wellness experiences, the sauna complex became the backdrop for one of Ronaldo’s boldest holiday moments: an ice-cold dip in subzero waters.
A freezing challenge, and Ronaldo didn’t disappoint
Ronaldo shared the moment with his 646 million Instagram followers, revealing the extreme conditions he walked into. The air temperature hovered around –20°C, while the water, kept open during winter for cold plunges, was around –2°C.
According to Esko Takkunen, the owner of Immelkartano, even experienced cold-plunge enthusiasts typically jump out almost immediately. Ronaldo, however, stayed in the water long enough to surprise even seasoned Finns.
“He stayed longer than most people dare to. Usually they just dip in and rush back out,” Takkunen said, impressed.
What Immelkartano Sauna World offers
The sauna world where Ronaldo tested his resilience is well-known for its variety of experiences. Visitors can choose from:
• A classic Finnish wood-heated sauna
• A smoke sauna
• A floating sauna on the lake
• A jacuzzi
• An outdoor hot tub
